Who is Maltese? What constitutes nationality, affinity, belonging? If there was a Maltese identity in the past, what will this be like in the future?
This English-taught programme is a multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach that is focused on Malta and the Maltese, with special reference to culture and identity in their various forms and manifestations, both past and present. You will be looking into themes such as ethnicity, politics, governance, migration, society, agriculture, environment, religion, archaeology, architecture, law, medicine, music, museums, archives, language, literature, art and heritage. This Master鈥檚 course draws on expertise from a wide range of disciplines in different faculties, so that you will be exceptionally well-supported and have access to a wide and unique range of knowledge.
By the end of the course, you will accumulate sufficient knowledge to carry out a research-based dissertation.
The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of a Bachelor degree from this University or an equivalent qualification from another recognized university, in an area of studies deemed suitable by the Board.
The Institute Admissions Committee may, after thorough examination of documents submitted in support of the qualifications presented, and following an interview, recommend the admission of applicants applying for admission in terms of the University鈥檚 Policy for the Recognition and Accreditation of Prior Learning (RPL) who are in possession of other academic or professional qualifications and documented experience if these are deemed to be comparable to the qualifications referred to in the above paragraph. The admission of such applicants may be made subject to those conditions that may be imposed to address any lacunae in the applicants鈥 academic preparation.

Realise what the quality of being Maltese and living in a Maltese habitat is and has been, including overseas contacts and collective memory.
Familiarise yourself with the public, ecclesiastical and private sectors with special emphasis on the influence that museums and collections had on the development of culture and identity in Malta.
Demonstrate the openness of Malta鈥檚 economy and the extent of dependence on trade and the maritime sector for employment and the business sector.
Gain an understanding of notions as 鈥渋magined communities鈥 and an awareness of the role of Maltese literature in the construction of identity and the national imaginary.
Comprehend gender influences, human options, conditions and experiences.

As a graduate in Maltese Studies, you will be able to enter a career in the public and private sectors of Maltese institutes, such as heritage and teaching. If you would like to further your studies, or are interested in pursuing an academic career, then you may choose to enrol in a doctorate programme offered by the University of Malta.
